Clicking on links

On this site, when you click on a link, the new page opens up in the same browser...taking you away from this site.  Some people have mentioned that this is not a good thing...that sometimes in a single post there are multiple links, and its a pain to go to the new page and then have to navigate back to the original message to go to the second link.

Here’s a way you can do it:

Windows users - click on the link with the right-mousebutton.  You’ll get a menu on which one of the options is “Open in New Window\”.  If you select that item, then the link will open the article in a new browser window, leaving the original window (with the original list of links) still intact.  Then when you are ready to go to the next link/article, you can do the same.

Mac users - Same idea, but since a Mac only has one button on the mouse, you need to hold down the CTRL key when you click on the link.  Then you will get the same menu...select “"Open in New Window\”, and the article will open in a new browser window.

Hope that helps!

I kept meaning to mention that...when I click on a link, I automatically X out of it and the board goes away and most of the time I forget where I was and dont go back to it. I was wondering if it would be that much more work to just copy and paste the article. I know I’m real bad about clicking on a link, or if I do, forgetting where I was and leaving the site, where if it was an article.. I’d be more likely to read it.

As mentioned elsewhere, technically it’s a copyright infringement to cut and paste the article into a message post (the original publisher is “losing out on ad revenue” if the article is copied/pasted here).  Now we’re a small enough site that it probably doesn’t really affect their bottom line all that much, but as part of the managers that run this site, I can’t officially recommend that people cut/paste articles here.

However, to address your main issue (leaving the site when clicking on the link), that is what my post above is addressing...that if you use your right-mouse-button (instead of the left one) to click on the link, it lets you open the article in a new window, so when you’re done reading that article, you can close the window and still be right where you were on the site.

I always thought if you pasted a story, that you had to paste who wrote it and where you found it? I’m trying to remember to open stories in a new window, but its teaching an old dog (a very OLD dog) new tricks :-)

Nope… copyrights are about permission ("right to copy"), not credit.  So pasting who wrote it and where you found it only gives credit...it doesn’t grant you permission to posting the article.  Pasting the link ensures that the article is accessed by the original owner of the article.
