In the aftermath of the Giants’ dominating win over the Baltimore Ravens, a number of debates have come up regarding the Giants. Here are some thoughts on a couple of topics being discussed:

Aaron Ross has had a couple of rough weeks, getting beaten repeatedly against Cleveland by Braylon Edwards, then giving up a deep touchdown pass to rookie Josh Morgan of the 49ers. I’ve seen a handful of posts on various football forums talking about Ross, saying he’s been “exposed” and is no good. At this point, I’ll respectfully disagree, noting that he’s still a very young player only in his second year in the NFL, with only 15 starts in his career (and not all of those starts had him at CB the entire game). I think his physical skills are excellent, with good speed and tackling technique, and he has proven toughness (as seen by his playing with a separated shoulder in the playoffs last year). And I think he is one of those guys who is probably very easy to coach and is hard working (to have a fiancee like Olympian Sanya Richardson, I can’t imagine that he’s not a disciplined guy.

Plaxico Burress returned to the Giants after being suspended from the team and answered questions from the media about what happened last week. The result? The media is bashing him harshly for his “I don’t care” attitude. But is it really a problem for the Giants? I don’t think so.

Sinorice Moss has a lot to prove. As a 2nd round draft pick in 2006 (the Giants traded up a few spots to get him), expectations were high for the brother of Pro Bowl receiver Santana Moss. But to date, Sinorice has had a disappointing career with the Giants, having been slowed by injury and facing strong competition from wide receivers Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon, both of whom were drafted into the league after him. And by drafting Mario Manningham in the most recent NFL draft, the Giants served notice to Sinorice that he doesn’t have much time left to prove himself.

Ever since the Giants went on their magical run to win Super Bowl 42, everyone from Giant fans to “expert” analysts have remarked about how “Eli Manning turned the corner” in his development, raising the level of his play to lead his team at just the right time as the Giants faced tough competition in the 2007 playoffs. But did he really change? Here is my perspective on Eli Manning’s performance from last year and how it might project into this year.

One of the big position battles going into this year’s training camp is at wide receiver. Our starters - Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer - are pretty much set, and it’s clear that Steve Smith makes the roster. But after those three, which receivers make the final cut is up for grabs. The criteria for keeping receivers at the #4-6 spot (assuming we only keep 6 on the active roster) will be a combination of receiving skills and special teams contributions. From our roster last year, the contenders are David Tyree, Sinorice Moss, and Dominque Hixon. Rookies and players from last year’s practice squad include Mario Manningham, Brandon London, DJ Hall, and Craphonso Thorpe. That’s 7 players vying for 3 spots.
